Leeds is the most diverse city in England outside of London. There are more languages and cultures here than anywhere else.
For the first time, the 2011 Census collected information on languages spoken. The results showed at least 85 different languages being spoken by people in Leeds (and almost certainly many more because the census includes “other” categories).
While 92.9% of people in Leeds aged 3 and over speak English as their main language there are still 51,221 people for whom English is not their main language, and over 10,000 people who do not speak English well or at all.
The top 10 languages are shown below, together with the number of people in Leeds who listed the language as their main one.
